Cannabidiol (CBD) — what we know and what we don’t

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been recently covered in the media, and you may have even seen it as an add-in booster to your post-workout smoothie or morning coffee.

What exactly is CBD? Why is it suddenly so popular?

How is cannabidiol different from marijuana?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical

marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. While CBD is a component of marijuana (one of hundreds), by itself it

does not cause a “high.” According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence

potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

Is cannabidiol legal?

CBD is readily obtainable in most parts of the United States, though its exact legal status is in flux. All 50 states have laws legalizing CBD with varying degrees of

restriction, and while the federal government still considers CBD in the same class as marijuana, it doesn’t habitually enforce against it. In December 2015, the FDA

eased the regulatory requirements to allow researchers to conduct CBD trials. Currently, many people obtain CBD online without a medical cannabis license. The

government’s position on CBD is confusing, and depends in part on whether the CBD comes from hemp or marijuana. The legality of CBD is expected to change, as

there is currently bipartisan consensus in Congress to make the hemp crop legal which would, for all intents and purposes, make CBD difficult to prohibit.

The evidence for cannabidiol health benefits

CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood

epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies,

CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases it was able to stop them altogether. Videos of the effects of CBD on these children and their

seizures are readily available on the Internet for viewing, and they are quite striking. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these

conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.

CBD is commonly used to address anxiety, and for patients who suffer through the misery of insomnia, studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep

and staying asleep.

CBD may offer an option for treating different types of chronic pain. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed, using an animal model, CBD applied on the

skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain,

two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. More study in humans is needed in this area to substantiate the claims of CBD proponents about pain control

Is cannabidiol safe?

Side effects of CBD include nausea, fatigue and irritability. CBD can increase the level in your blood of the blood thinner coumadin, and it can raise levels of certain

other medications in your blood by the exact same mechanism that grapefruit juice does. A significant safety concern with CBD is that it is primarily marketed and

sold as a supplement, not a medication. Currently, the FDA does not regulate the safety and purity of dietary supplements. So you cannot know for sure that the

product you buy has active ingredients at the dose listed on the label. In addition, the product may contain other (unknown) elements. We also don’t know the most

effective therapeutic dose of CBD for any particular medical condition.

The bottom line on cannabidiol

Some CBD manufacturers have come under government scrutiny for wild, indefensible claims, such that CBD is a cure-all for cancer, which it is not. We need more

research but CBD may be prove to be an option for managing anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain. Without sufficient high-quality evidence in human studies we

can’t pinpoint effective doses, and because CBD is currently is mostly available as an unregulated supplement, it’s difficult to know exactly what you are getting. If

you decide to try CBD, talk with your doctor — if for no other reason than to make sure it won’t affect other medications you are taking.

Racial Disparities in Breast Cancer Mortality: Reasons Revealed

Posted in: Cancer- Aug 30, 2013 No Comments

For several decades, researchers have documented racial disparities in breast cancer mortality. Because breast cancer care relies extensively on an effective multidisciplinary team, inevitable questions arise concerning the roles that biologic, social, and health systems play in determining patient outcomes.

In “Disparities in Breast Cancer Treatment and Outcomes: Biological, Social, and Health System Determinants and Opportunities for Research,” Drs. Stephanie B. Wheeler, Katherine E. Reeder-Hayes, and Lisa A. Carey analyze existing literature to reveal underlying reasons for racial disparities in breast cancer care, emphasizing treatment disparities. Because evidence suggests that when women across racial groups receive equal treatment, equal outcomes follow, the researchers recommend that actively working towards equal access to health care resources should be a priority for reducing disparity and improving treatment outcomes. Recognizing this variation in cancer care could allow policymakers to identify strategies to equally distribute medical expertise and infrastructure across multiple user populations.(The Oncologist Newsletter < 8/27/2013>

Techniques You Can Fight Acne And Win

Posted in: Skin & Body Care- Aug 07, 2012 No Comments

Acne is a persistent problem that affects many people, so if you are suffering from acne it is first important to acknowledge that you are not alone. That said, solving acne problems is easier than you may think. Read on for some proven advice for dealing with recurring acne issues.

A key piece of advice for anyone suffering from acne is to conduct your own research on potential treatments that may eventually be prescribed by your dermatologist. Doing so can help you avoid the unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects many have encountered as a result of taking popular anti-acne medications.

If you cannot afford expensive acne treatments, then consider some budget-friendly at-home alternatives. For example, aspirin contains the powerful acne-fighting ingredient of salicylic acid. You can crush up a couple aspirin and make a facial mask to get the same benefits of expensive salicylic cleansers. Just be sure to consult your doctor first if you have heart trouble, since some of the aspirin can be absorbed into your skin.

To head off acne breakouts, be aware of your triggers and amp up your skin regimen when you are most at-risk. For example, stress causes many people to break out. If you are experiencing increased stress, then now more than ever you need to stick to a strict skincare regimen and up your water intake to counteract the negative effects that stress has on your body and skin.

If you just cannot get good results from over-the-counter skincare products, then it might be time to see a doctor or dermatologist. A skin expert can help you to determine the true cause of your acne and can prescribe you stronger products or drugs to treat those deeper internal causes.

To keep your face clean and clear, you also need to keep your hair clean and clear. That means washing it regularly and keeping it off of your skin when it is full of products that could make your face feel greasy. Chances are, if your hair is oily then your skin will soon be oily too.

Avoiding both the sun and the use of sunscreen can help you clear up your acne. The sun can cause your skin to shed more than usual, which results in more clogged pores. In addition, many sunscreens contain oils that can also clog your pores. The solution? Look for sunscreen that is labeled “non-comedgenic.”? These sunscreens do not contain these oily ingredients, and research has shown that they do not clog pores or cause acne.

To help you avoid acne after exercising you should not allow sweat to linger. Allowing sweat to linger will clog your pores and make you more prone to getting acne. So to avoid acne you should use a mild cleanser immediately after exercising in order to wipe away dirt or sweat.

Overwashing the face is not a good idea if you have acne. It may seem like a good thing to do but it can actually cause more breakouts by drying out the skin. Dry skin will only trigger more oil production which is not helpful. Limit your facial washing routine to once in the morning and once before bed for clearer and calmer skin.

If you just cannot get good results from over-the-counter skincare products, then it might be time to see a doctor or dermatologist. A skin expert can help you to determine the true cause of your acne and can prescribe you stronger products or drugs to treat those deeper internal causes.

Try the hints that are appropriate to your skin situation and begin taking charge of your skin today. You can make the choices you need to give your skin a healthy glow. You will feel your self esteem grow as you take the steps necessary to clear your acne breakouts.
